I have been playing in this York University slo-pitch tournament for about 8 years. This year’s was probably the weirdest. For the first time, in the 8 years, we did not make the playoffs round. We were close but not good enough. What was really sad was the fact that I had to do this horrible umping assignment because the rest of my team ditched me. After the assignment I went to my brother’s place where we were having a team party. After being there for a couple of hours i got a call from another captain from the baseball tournament. He asked me if I heard what happened in the finals. I said no. With one out remaining in the game, the two teams had an on-field brawl. Punches were thrown and both teams were disqualified. I would have liked to see that. Some of my teammates would have liked to join in. Should be interesting to see what the commish does with the two teams.

September 29, 2008The New Walking Challenge
September 15, 2008According to my cell, over the last two weeks I have somehow already gotten my average over 6000 steps per day. I had lunch with a friend last week and I told them about this and they said that 10,000 should be the goal. I have been mulling that over. It would be tough because I don’t always have the cell phone on me and my work has me sitting in front of a computer all day. I do play sports but I don’t wear the cell phone while I do that. Last week I set my cell to also keep track of how many calories I am burning. So I could also make the goal calorie based.
I think I am going to aim for 8,000 steps per day. That would be a jump over my average of 6361 from the last three months. By New Year’s day, hopefully I will have achieved my goal and will set the bar even higher!
What you missed
September 15, 2008On Friday, Chrissy, Janet, Boston and I went out for birthday festivities. We talked about going to a movie and then ended up going to Yonge and Sheppard area where we had dinner at Baton Rouge. Chrissy had never ate their before because of allergies but they changed their policy and she was good to go! EXCEPT she wasn’t fond of the chicken tenders, too crunchy was one small complaint. So she ended up giving half her chicken to me. Man that was TOO MUCH food. They also convinced me to drink some drink I wasn’t interested in. When we were done at the restaurant it was too late to go to the movie so we went to a local bar instead. We hung out and played a close game of pool on a table with NO 8-BALL but it was fun. It was a late night but a fun night.
The next night was a boys only celebration planned by Boston. I arrived at Boston’s place to find most of the guys already in attendance. The only one missing was Baller. He arrived soon after and we were off to “Devil’s Martini”. I have never been to the place but I was told it had a dress code. I wore a collared shirt for it but I wore a jacket over it because it was raining. Baller didn’t know about the dress code and was worried about his hat and the lack of collar. As we walked up to the place we decided to try and hide him. We never got a chance to find out if he would have gotten in, I had forgotten to change my shoes. The shoes I was wearing weren’t bad but the shoelaces were white and brown which means they drew attention to themselves. If the laces were one colour I would have been fine. Baller and I told Boston to go in without us. It was his party and that is where he wanted to be. As Baller and I walked off we weighted our options. I even called my bro to see what he was doing. That was when Baller had an idea, we decided to go to his girl’s place to pick up a spare pair of shoes for me and a better shirt for him. The only problem was that it was a little bit of a walk (it was still raining a bit) and his girl… while I am not sure if she is anymore. They are sortof on a break. She was home when we got there… I didn’t sense any over-whelming tension, I am not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing.
When we finally returned to the “Devil’s Martini” the line to get in was quite a bit longer. I wondered if we would ever get in. I was about to call Boston when we saw him and the others come out. Perfect timing! He wanted to go to a more “bar”-like place. We walked up to Queen street. This is the interesting part of the story.
We were all huddled into a bus shelter waiting for a street car (there was 7 of us). A hot girl walked up and started trash-talking Chris. She was asking him if he was afraid of the rain or afraid of ruining his hair. She had an umbrella but she wasn’t using it… well that isn’t true because she started playfully hitting Chris with it. She then came into the shelter and started asking guys if they wanted to smoke pot with her. I looked for Baller to step up. The girl then made the statement that changed everything, “This sucks, you know what today is?” I asked her what, hoping the answer is what I hoped it was. And then she said it, it was her birthday. We practically cheered and told her it was Boston’s birthday too. She grabbed him and said “Really?” She then pushed/led him out into the rain and to the road. She got into a puddle and asked him to join her. She wanted him to dance with her in the puddle. We cheered him on but he was relunctant. I was about to step up and tell her it was my birthday and join her in the puddle (I wasn’t wearing my shoes anymore) but then she gave up and ran across the street. She went into a bar and came out 5 minutes later. We were going to call out to her but then a fire-truck stopped in the middle of the road. When it finally moved on… she was gone (just like in the movies). I was really disappointed in Boston, we weren’t asking him to cheat on his girlfriend, just have some fun in a puddle with a hot girl on his birthday.
We went to a bar that I went to a couple of weeks before. They have chocolate beer on the menu and for the second time, they were all out. We hung out for awhile there watching “The Gods must be Crazy” on TV (I had to explain the plot to most of the people at the table, they had never seen it). The ride home took awhile as we missed the last subway and had to ride the “Vomit comet”. I didn’t get home until after 3am.
Played baseball on sunday, my brother and the single mother are the captains for our fall league. It was game #1 and we crushed our opponent 35-15. That was pretty much it. Any plans for next weekend?
An update on my “Walking” Challenge
September 3, 2008About three months back I got a new cell, here is the blog about it: http://whataboutbobb.wordpress.com/2008/06/17/my-new-cellphone/
My goal was 5000 steps a day or 5 kms. It seems 5000 steps is easier, I averaged 5844 steps a day. The good news is that I also averaged 5.25 kms a day so I broke both marks. Now I need to put my weight and height into the phone so that it can tell me how many calories I am burning and such. I am probably going to re-set the counter in a week or so and start a new challenge. Maybe 6000 steps a day. I am not sure how high to reach for.
The Drive-in
September 2, 2008On saturday night I once again pitched my drive-in idea and somebody actually agreed to go! I have wanted to go to this local drive-in for awhile. I think it is a good deal and a story. Well I went with the WonderTwins on the weekend. A couple of other people bailed at the last second. I tried sitting in a chair outside of the car but the sound wasn’t loud enough for me. I ended up in a hundred different positions in the Wonder Twins back seat. But back to the beginning.
It was a triple feature: Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express and Step Brothers. Price: $13. The website suggested getting to Newmarket early because there could be a long line-up. There was a line-up but it wasn’t very long and we still had tons of parking spaces to choose from. We tried playing a game of cards while we waited. I was losing badly in Wizard, man I haven’t played that game in a long time.
We weren’t sure how much food we were allowed to bring in, we saw other cars brought in pizzas, that is something to remember for next time. We brought in chips and drinks. The concession prices weren’t bad either, better than movie theatres.
We only stayed for the first two movies. Step Brothers was going to start at 12:15 am or something. I enjoyed Tropic Thunder more than Pineapple Express although Pineapple was still entertaining. I highly suggest that everyone goes to a drive-in movie at some point, it is a fun experience.
